African aesthetics
The
Great Mosque's signature trio of minarets overlooks the central market of Djenné. Unique Malian aesthetic
African art
existed in many forms and styles, and with fairly little influence from
outside Africa. Most of it followed traditional forms and the aesthetic
norms were handed down orally as well as written. Sculpture and
performance art
are prominent, and abstract and partially abstracted forms are valued,
and were valued long before influence from the Western tradition began
in earnest. The
Nok culture is testimony to this. The mosque of
Timbuktu shows that specific areas of Africa developed unique aesthetics
